The Schoolmaster’s Bride

In chapter 7 of Anne’s House of Dreams, entitled “The Schoolmaster’s Bride,” Captain Jim Boyd tells newlyweds Anne and Gilbert and their guests the story of Persis Leigh, who had travelled to Prince Edward Island from Scotland six decades earlier as the bride of Captain Jim’s dear friend John Selwyn. Pausing occasionally to keep “a passing tryst with visitants Anne and Gilbert could not see” and to “gaz[e] into the glowing fire in a quest of the bygones,” Captain Jim puts his talents as an oral storyteller to good use, engaging his listeners with questions and asides as he goes. Montgomery’s process of writing this story proved to be more complicated than Captain Jim’s oral delivery of it, however. According to her journals, she had outlined the plot of the story shortly before the death of her maternal grandmother in March 1911 but had only been able to resume work on it in late 1915. She ended up publishing this version of the story in Everywoman’s World, a Toronto periodical, in July 1917, just a month before the release of Anne’s House of Dreams; the issue in question also contained an instalment of her celebrity memoir, “The Alpine Path: The Story of My Career.”
